What does it take to build out a new service area?
Ever wondered what it takes to bring fast fiber internet to a new area? We’re here to walk through the process —from the first survey to the final installation. Dive in with us as we explore the intricate steps, cutting-edge tech, and community efforts that make high-speed internet a reality. It is an involved process, but nothing worth it is ever easy!
Breaking down our construction process
Step 1
Marking of public utilities
Before construction can begin, our crews need to know where all other public utilities are located underground. The utilities are identified with paint markings and/or small flags placed in the ground. The paint is non-permanent and will fade over time. The flags are removed at the completion of the project. The purpose of marking these lines is to avoid damage to buried utilities and prevent any service disruption to your community. As a property owner, there is nothing for you to do during this stage. Your turn comes later. Each utility provider is responsible for locating their own lines.

Step 2
Construction to install mainline fiber optic network
The mainline construction process is the extension of West Carolina’s network to your community. During this stage, we are physically burying the fiber optic cables. For the most part, the path taken is usually along public rights of way such as streets and sidewalks. The technique used to bury the fiber optic cables varies between underground boring (called directional boring), some trenching (called open trench) and even some hand digging using a shovel.

Step 3
Construction to connect new West Carolina customers’ homes to the West Carolina network
This step extends the fiber from the curb to the outside of your home. During this stage, we are physically burying the fiber optic cables in your yard that will transport high-speed internet, television, and voice services to your individual home. We submit requests to other utilities to mark their lines so that we can avoid disturbing them when we bury your fiber connection. Not all providers respond. While we are committed to doing our best to avoid other utility lines, a cut may be unavoidable if they are not marked. Our goal is 100% satisfaction for each homeowner and to that end, it is our responsibility to ensure your property is handled with care. It is not necessary for you to be home during the actual burying process but as explained above, we will meet with you prior to the start to discuss the path of the fiber line.
