West Carolina, FRS Award $14,000 in scholarships to emerging leaders

West Carolina recently celebrated the achievements of local high school seniors at its annual Scholarship Recognition Reception, awarding a combined $14,000 in scholarships to support students’ continued education.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of West Carolina’s signature $8,000 scholarship, issued over four years at $2,000 per year. This year’s recipient is Nicolas Largaespada, son of José and Ada Largaespada, from Crescent High School.

West Carolina also partners with the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) each year to support rural students nationwide. This year, Emma Grace Vernon, daughter of Dale and Carla Vernon of Crescent High School, received the $1,000 Roger Cox Memorial Scholarship, a competitive national award named in honor of a lifelong advocate for rural connectivity and opportunity.

In memory of longtime community leader Walt Thomas, the cooperative also presented the $1,000 Walt Thomas Scholarship to Tron Paul, son of Parris and Ronie Paul, a graduating senior from Crescent High School. This scholarship honors students who demonstrate strong character, service to others, and a commitment to their community.

Additionally, West Carolina honored four graduating seniors who are children of its employees as part of its internal Family Scholarship program, awarding $1,000 scholarships to students pursuing higher education. The following students were recognized:

  • Drew Biggerstaff, son of John and MJ Biggerstaff
  • Dayne Botts, son of Lana and Wayne Botts
  • Dylan Crawford, son of Mark and Kelly Crawford
  • McKenna Hagan, daughter of JR and Chasity Hagan

All external scholarship applications are independently judged by a panel selected by FRS in Washington, DC, ensuring fairness and impartiality in the selection process.

Chris Townson, CEO of West Carolina, congratulated the students and underscored the surrounding area’s role in their success.

“These scholarships aren’t just about financial support; they’re about investing in the future of rural South Carolina,” Townson said. “Behind every graduate is a community that believed in them. We’re honored to be part of that story.”

Wes McAllister, president of the West Carolina Board of Directors, emphasized the character and potential of the honorees.

“It’s always inspiring to gather and celebrate students who represent the very best of who we are,” McAllister said. “They’ve earned these scholarships through their grit, heart, and commitment. We’re excited to see what’s ahead for each of them.”
